Indefinite and definite nouns

Romanian puts the indefinite article before the noun: un bilet, o carte. The definite article usually attaches to the noun: biletul, cartea. Learn plural and spelling changes with each noun. “Definite” means the listener can identify the item.

Indefinite: un / o / niște

Use un for masculine and neuter singular, o for feminine singular, and niște for indefinite plurals. Learn each noun together with its gender.

Am un bilet.

I have a ticket.

Am o carte.

I have a book.

Am niște bilete.

I have some tickets.

Definite: a noun ending

In these examples un bilet becomes biletul and o carte becomes cartea. The definite article is not a separate word; the noun changes form.

Biletul este aici.

The ticket is here.

Cartea este aici.

The book is here.
