Places and basic prepositions
Answer “Where?” with a fi and a place phrase. Use în for inside, pe for on, lângă for beside, sub for under, and la for places such as school. Here we describe a fixed location.
In, on, beside, under
For a fixed position, use noun + este + place phrase. Noun forms after prepositions vary with meaning and definiteness; learn each phrase as a unit for now.
Cartea este pe masă.
The book is on the table.
Biletul este în geantă.
The ticket is in the bag.
Cartea este lângă telefon.
The book is beside the phone.
Location with la and în
Say Sunt la școală for being at school and Sunt în București for being in the city. Everyday lessons will later introduce movement and destinations with other verbs.
Eu sunt la școală.
I am at school.
Ea este în București.
She is in Bucharest.
